|5 tips for rocking matte lipstick|
Matte lipsticks have made a huge comeback since the 90s, and are now a huge trend that shows no signs of slowing down. You can now find a matte lipstick in every color imaginable, and from just about every brand you can think of. While I do love a good matte lipstick, wearing them is no walk in the park, and there are some tips you need to know especially if you plan to wear them often. Here are some tips on how to wear matte lipstick.
Matte lipsticks can be very drying on the lips, especially the liquid to mattes that are very popular right now. Therefore you are not going to want to put it on already dry chapped lips since it will only result in drier lips. Matte lipsticks also have a way of showing up chapped, dry lips, so you’ll want to ensure your lips are soft and smooth. The best way to do this is to exfoliate. My exfoliator of choice is the Elf Lip Exfoliator. It is compact, affordable and not only exfoliates but also moisturizes. There are other DIY options available as well if you prefer to make your own.

As I mentioned above matte lipsticks are super drying, so after exfoliating your next step should be to moisturize. Moisturizing limits the drying side effect, and helps your lip color to glide onto lips. You can moisturize with your favorite lip balm or lip cream. You’re not going to want to use a gloss, since you don’t want to change the texture of your lipstick. My lip balm of choice is the Eos Lip Balm, and I sometimes use the Vaseline Lip Therapy.
Line and Apply Color
Depending on who you ask lip liner is optional, but I say go for it! Anything that helps to improve the wear of your product should be included in your routine. Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide on Lip Pencil in Ozone is not only transparent, but also prevents feathering around the edges. To apply the lip color, I prefer to use a brush since it allows for precision and ensures that I get the corners. You can also use the brush to control how much you apply, and to smooth out your matte lipstick.
Mistakes happen, and to be honest I don’t think I have ever put on lipstick without messing up something. Once your color has set feel free to use your favorite concealer or foundation to go over areas where you may have made a mistake and correct it. My concealer of choice is the Estee Lauder Double Wear Concealer. It’s full coverage, and stays in place for up to 8 hours (and in some cases even longer).
Removing matte lipstick is a very important step because lipstick that has been left behind will dry out the lips. The thing is removing matte lipsticks can be a pain, especially the liquid to matte long wear ones. There have been nights where I have fell asleep in my Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks, and woke up looking nothing short of dehydrated. Thankfully Nyx Cosmetics released the Be Gone! Lip Color Remover designed to remove even the longest wear matte lipstick. I have been using it for close to a month now and it really works. It’s also a huge time saver which is perfect after a long day and a lazy night.
